Magic Forest Fellowship Tournament Guide

how the weekly Tournament works, and what we're trying to achieve as a fellowship

Every week a new Tournament opens up on the World Map. This page explains how the Tournament works, which rewards are the ones worth caring about, and what we are trying to achieve as a fellowship.

the basics

How the Tournament works

The Tournament is a weekly, fellowship-wide event built on the same encounter mechanic you already know from scouting provinces. Each week it runs in your already-solved provinces of one type of good, rotating through Marble, Steel, Planks, Crystal, Scrolls, Silk, Elixir, Magic Dust and Gems.

1

Find the Tournament provinces

When a Tournament is running, a matching province you've already solved lights up on the World Map with a Tournament icon. When you solve that tournament encounter, a new one pops up in another matching province (as long as you still have one).

2

Solve one encounter per level

Each Tournament province has 6 stages with one encounter each. You can either cater to the encounter by paying goods, or fight it. The amount of goods required for catering and the difficulty of the battle increases both with the number of the province (e.g. the 10th province is more difficult to solve than the 1st) and the stage (e.g. the 1 stage of 5th province is easier than the 4th stage of the 5th province).

3

Earn points, relics, and more

Every solved encounter earns different rewards. First, there are rewards only for you. These include Relics, Knowledge Points, Enchantment, Rune Shards and Broken Shards. Second, each each encounter also gives Tournament Points, which go to a shared pool for the whole Fellowship. Higher stages give more tournament points.

4

Wait for the next stage

After you solve a stage, that province needs a cooldown before the next stage opens. You can shorten this cooldown with Time Boosters or, theoretically, Diamonds (don't!). The Ancient Wonder D111-a "Timewarp" also shortens this cooldown. However, you can complete all 6 stages without shortening the cooldown.

One thing to remember: you have to earn at least one Tournament Point to receive any rewards at the end of the week, so even a single encounter gets you your share of the chests the fellowship unlocks. Also, if you join a fellowship mid-Tournament, you can play and win personal rewards, but your points won't count for the fellowship until the next week.
The Tournament overview (top left of the map) shows everything at a glance.

the chests

Not all chests are equal

All the points members of the fellowship collects are pooled. Each time the total reaches a checkpoint, a chest unlocks, and its contents are paid out to everyone who took part when the Tournament ends. There are ten regular chests, but they are not all worth the same.

Chest 10 is the main prize. After it, nine very tough bonus chests unlock for fellowships that get that far.

Chest 10 — the Blueprint

The big one. The tenth chest is the only free source of a Blueprint in the game. A Blueprint is combined with Spell Fragments in the Magic Academy to craft Royal Restorations or Artefacts. They also upgrade Magic Residences or Magic Workshops. Blueprints are rare and hard to get, so this is our main target.

Chests with Royal Restoration

Several chests (4th, 6th, 8th, 9th) contain Royal Restorations, which you need to upgrade Ancient Wonders (every 5 levels), upgrade event buildings, and place most Wonders. Worth a look in the chest preview — these are the next best chests after the tenth.

Bonus chests (after chest 10)

A second set of 9 chests opens once the tenth is unlocked. Each holds 1 Royal Restoration and 1 Ancient Knowledge 10, but the point targets climb steeply — a stretch goal that is currently out of reach for our fellowship.

The exact contents of each chest can change from time to time, so trust the in-game preview over any list, including this one.

our current plan

We're saving up for the tenth chest

Plenty of fellowships race to open as many chests as they can every single week. That is our goal as well, but only partly so. Instead, sometimes, we're also aiming to build up enough stored points each week to help us reach the tenth chest and its Blueprint in a later week. The archmage will typically indicate in the chat if it is a week where the goal is to reach the 10th chest or store points. If it is to store points, we try to finish just short of completing the current chest. So if possible, on the last day of the Tournament (Saturday), check the chat for messages from the Archmage what the current goal is. If it is to store points, please check the current Tournament progress to see whether adding more points will put us over the top or not.

In short: our goal is not always to finish as many chests as we can, but in some weeks it is to store up points for later, i.e. stop just short of finishing the last chest. Check in the chat for messages from the Archmage (or in his absence, other Mages).

How the stored points work

1

Unfinished progress is archived

At the end of a Tournament, points the fellowship earned towards a chest it didn't finish are kept in the Fellowship's Tournament Archive instead of being lost.

2

Archived points can be used in a later Tournament

The stored points can be put towards unlocking chests in the next Tournament. How many points the Archive can hold depends on our fellowship's Tournament Archive perk level. We are at level 10, which means we can store up to 25,000 points. But usually, much fewer archived points are needed to reach the 10th chest.

3

A Mage or the Archmage releases the archived points

Only the Archmage and Mages can use the stored points. It only works if the stored points are enough to actually reach that chest's requirement.

For you, this does not change much in how you play. Just keep solving encounters when you have time, and the points will go where they're needed. The only request: if the Archmage or a Mage asks in chat to hold off on a particular chest, we're probably saving up.

your part in it

How you can help

Like everything else here, the Tournament is entirely voluntary. Do as much of the ladder below as suits your needs and available resources.

Ithe bare minimum

Solve at least one encounter

  • One point is all it takes to get your share of the chests at the end of the week.
IIa little thought

Check in once or twice a day

  • Because each level has a cooldown, a quick visit morning and evening gets far more levels done than one long session.
IIIa bit of effort

Prioritize more stages over more provinces

  • The later levels give the most points per encounter. So you earn many more points my finishing stage 6 of the first three provinces than by finishing stage 1 of 18 provinces.

Miscellaneous Tips

Combine fighting and catering

It is difficult to rely on only one method to solve encounters. Generally, you should always fight when your units have the advantage against all the enemy units (e.g. if the enemy sends mages and heavy melee, you can send light ranged units). You probably want to fight when you can avoid using units that are weak against a certain enemy units (e.g. if the enemy sends light melee, light ranged and heavy ranged units, you can send heavy ranged units). If you cannot avoid sending units that are weak against one enemy unit, consider catering instead, especially if the enemy outnumbers you.

Skip very difficult encounters

In stage 1, you have to finish a province to open the next one. But in later stages, this is not necessary. If, for example, stage 3 of the 10th province is very difficult, you can skip it and still do stages 3 to 6 of all other provinces.

Helpful buildings

Naturally, all Ancient Wonders that help your troops fight are useful for fighting in the Tournament (Needles of the Tempest, The Sanctuary, Heroes' Forge, Dragon Abbey, Temple of the Toads, Victory Springs), as are buildings that produce units. Similarly, all buildings that increase or provide production help with catering. Other useful buildings for the Tournament are:
  • D111-a "Timewarp": This Ancient Wonder reduces the cooldown between Tournament stages, making it much easier to complete all 6 stages.
  • Tinlug, The Star Serpent: This event building produces Combining Catalysts (CC) as you complete Tournament encounters when you feed it Pet Food (60h duration). Fully evolved, you get one CC for five solved encounters.
  • Azure Phoenix: This event building does not help solving encounters, but it increases the points earned from each encounter when fed with Pet Food (24h duration). Fully evolved, you earn 35% more points.
  • Cosmic Phoenix: This event building does not help solving encounters either, but it increases the likelihood that you receive extra Rune Shards as a reward when fed with Pet Food (24h duration). Fully evolved, there is a 40% chance for an extra Rune Shard.

Rewards pattern

The rewards for the first few provinces tend to be all over the place, but later provinces show a certain pattern: Stage 1 gives Power of Provision, Stage 2 gives Knowledge Points, Stage 3 gives Rune Shard, Stage 4 gives Ensorcelled Endowment, Stage 5 Magical Manufacturing and Stage 6 gives Broken Shards.

Frequently asked questions

The questions that tend to come up around Tournament time.

Do I have to take part in the Tournament?

No. It's never mandatory in our fellowship. But even a few encounters help, and you get individual rewards and share in whatever chests the fellowship unlocks, so it is typically in your own interest to take part.

Why aren't we trying to open as many chests as possible each week?

We're working towards the tenth chest, which holds the Blueprint — it's the only free way to get one. So it is better to forgo, e.g., finishing the 9th chest and instead store a lot of points so we can finish the 10th chest with our stored points in the following week.

I just started and I do not see any Tournament. Why is that?

The Tournament needs to be unlocked on the research tree. It becomes available in chapter IV.
